The client wanted to set up a server infrastructure that allows scalability and resillience.
A web hosting server cluster is like a team of computers working together to host websites and online services.
It can be likened to a team of people, where each server has a specific role, in improving efficiency and performance. If one server fails, others fill in, ensuring the website stays up - like team members covering for each other.
This setup allows for easy scaling, adding more servers as needed, like expanding a team to handle the increased workload. Essentially, it ensures reliability, seamless user experience, and flexibility to grow.
This is a standard production architecture with active backup redundancy at the network level, and triple redundancy at the server level, allowing for rolling security upgrades/patching of servers. This means you can take a server offline for maintenance, while still retaining redundancy with the other two online servers.
This architecture can be easily scaled out, by adding servers at any layer to increase performance and redundancy. Alternatively, you can duplicate it for User Acceptance Testing(UAT), Disaster Recovery(DR) and Development Environments.
We build, monitor and maintain many different web hosting clusters with different architectures depending on our client’s exact requirements, and comfort with risk.
Though the general architecture is similar, the application that runs on the cluster will dictate the limitations of performance and redundancy.
